Full Name: Kale Ian Connor Daly (McCallum, see history)
Called By: Kale (You can try Cabage Boy and you can also get stabbed/punched)
Age: 33
Please describe your OC's universe of origin: Link here.
Description: Kale is tall and lanky with a huge smattering of freckles on his pale face. Family lore says that they were cursed by fairies to have freckles. No one knows why anyone would curse a family to have freckles but there you go. His hair is a brilliant red and his eyes are summer grass green. He tends to wear gloves, long sleeve shirts and pants as often as possible because he wants to make sure his psychometry doesn’t go off unexpectedly.
History: To describe Kale’s history, one must be go back about six thousand years ago to a small city state in the Middle East where a prince became a slave and consort to a god. Shipwrecked far from home the prince, Tuathal and his twin brother Caoimhín were sold to the gods of this city state when the eldest - the moon god - declared that he wanted one of them, never indicating which one he wanted. Tuathal was the one who got chosen to join the god’s harem. The god was quite fond of Tuathal and after a great deal of strife, the affection was returned. Caoimhín meanwhile went off to work for the Keeper of the Temples. Eventually he became a captain of the guard. Though he never quite liked seeing what happened to his brother he never said anything against it, because who was he to say anything to the gods? And his brother was happy.
And then Tuathal died, as all mortals do. Caoimhín had died about ten years earlier, protecting a caravan and Tuathal never was the same after.
The god refused to take this as a reality.
He went to his youngest brother, the god of the dead and death and demanded he bring Tuathal back. After much debating and discussion and talking with Tuathal’s goddess of the dead they came to an agreement: Tuathal would be reincarnated but the moon god wouldn’t know where and as who. He would have to search for the new person that Tuathal had been born as and convince him or her to fall in love with him again. This, sadly led to the start of the city state’s downfall for the moon god spent many years away looking for his lover. And the city needs all its gods.
Time past and Tuathal’s soul got recycled over the many long years until modern day when it became Trever. Caoimhín went along with him because he refused to allow his brother go out alone and be with that god who he didn’t completely trust or like. He didn’t remember the god, of course, but he would still be with his brother to fight by his side.
Raised in Cork, Ireland Kale is the youngest child of three boys. He has an older brother, Nathan “Nat” who is a chef at a five star restaurant, and a twin brother, Trever who is vet and an animal shaman and his co-worker. His father Calvin is a diplomat for Ireland and his mother used to be in the army but has since retired. His father is also the current “king”. On his mother’s side of the family he’s related to the Morrigan on his father’s he’s related to Brigid. Naturally, family gatherings tend to be … interesting when they show up.
Kale grew up in his mother’s family home called Thorn Hall and was raised pretty much as a McCallum. His mother was the second eldest of twelve siblings and her youngest sister and brother was born around the same time as Nat was. McCallums are known for a penchent for mad violence, perhaps a bit of berserker fury. They tend to grow out of it, or settle, but as children they’re a bit .. weird. Ceilidh, Kale’s youngest cousin at four enjoys playing games like “destroy the village and rain death upon all those who defy her” with her toy ponies and dolls. When she grows up she wants to crush the world under her heel or be a vet like Kale’s brother, Trever. Her pony is named Bone Crusher Bringer of Doom. Or Boney for short. She also stole a pony because her mother wouldn’t buy one for her. She’s four, did we mention this?
Fortunately Kale’s father manage to even out some of the McCallum traits. However despite being a Daly in name, he is firmly a McCallum. The Morrigan and Brigid made a bet when Talia was pregnant. Whoever could get Talia to take their suggestion for names got to take the unborn child for their influence. The Morrigan waited until Talia was exhausted from childbirth and a bit fuzzy in the head to suggest Trever - with an “e” and Kale - like the cabbage - as names for the twins. Talia thought that was a brilliant idea. Calvin didn’t but he was out of the room when Talia told the nurses. He got to give the boys their middle names though. Which is why they’re less weird.
His childhood was fairly unremarkable for a McCallum. He grew up outside of the city with a bunch of animals and a huge family with supernatural creatures occasionally stopping by who wished to speak with the king, his father. It wasn’t a secret kept from him or his brothers, but it wasn’t actually mentioned to other people. It was something that you knew or you didn’t.
Kale and Trever got into the usual amounts of ridiculous trouble that two twin boys of heroic descent could get into in the countryside. Their mother taught them the fine art of killing things with weapons and how to defend themselves starting when they were about five. Kale’s first really big instance with his psychometry happened when he was about eight. His uncle Dara, the eldest of the McCallums siblings, had gone missing and the family thought he might have been taken by fairies. Near Thorn Hall are some standing stones which are a gateway to fairy. Deciding to try and help he went up to the stones and see if Dara had gone through. Touching the stones turned out to be a mistake as they overwhelmed his eight year old mind as they were thousands of years old and had many powerful creatures pass through them. He dropped into a coma, unable to overcome the different personalities. Rhys Owens - who later became Kale’s boss - was asked by his parents to try and help. He came in the middle of the night one evening and did Something Rhys Like. Because he is Rhys and can Do These Things. Only Kale’s parents and grandparents know that he’d come by. But after he visited, Kale came out of his coma and slowly was able to get rid of the other personalities. It took him several months to do so, but eventually Kale knew who Kale was.
During secondary school he started working in his uncle Rory’s mechanic’s shop. He thought about going to university, but decided against it. It was hard being separated from Trever who did go onto the University of College Dublin and so after a year he moved up to Dublin and got a job in the city working for an IT company. He and Trever shared a flat and managed to juggle jobs and dates so neither of them were caught with their pants down. Kale helped Trever with his local animal rescues as any good brother would. He even helped Trever keep the annoying little teleporting kitten. (Later, when she had kittens, he would realize the mistake of it.)
About a year after Trever graduated from University College Dublin he and Trever were contacted by an old family friend, Rhys Owen. Rhys was looking to recruit the twins for a new organization he was restarting. Restarting because every fifty to a hundred years he would make a new version of it. This time around he was calling it the Department of Magical Crimes or DMC. One of the earliest versions was the Round Table. Rhys, it should be noted, was known as Merlin for a while. The DMC’s purpose was to take care of crimes and magical problems that governments don’t wish to or don’t have the capabilities to deal with. Because of politics or resources.
Of course they agreed to do it.
Other members of the team eventually include a pair of triplets from Boston High Society and Old Money: Anna, a doctor, Adrian, a ritual mage (think mad scientist) and Adrienne, a war mage; Lan, their intern an empath and psychometric from Russia, Eric, an ex- drug addict and shanghaied into being Adrian’s apprentice and Theodred Sammeth a necromancer and demi-god, his, Melkor, father being one of the most powerful businessmen in the world and his uncle being Ash... a moon god.
It was Ash that was the focus of their first case. The god had created a second dust bowl in the continental United States to gather up enough energy to repower himself and his godly abilities. The team (minus Eric and Lan) managed to stop him in Los Angeles just before the ritual could be completed. The deciding factor was Trever distracting Ash long enough for Adrian to finish shutting down the portals.
Why did Trever distract Ash? Because Ash recognized him as Tuathal. Though Trever, of course, didn’t recognize him. Ash was captured and his powers dampened. Apparently this was a small price for the god to pay to have Trever back in his life again.
Trever didn’t feel the same way. He had no interest in Ash sexually or socially. Unfortunately Ash didn’t understand no. Also, unfortunately, Trever sometimes found himself acting weird around Ash. Time passed and he mostly kept away from Ash, as much as he could considering that Theo was his co-worker. That and Ash was very good at stalking him. Which unnerves the hell out of Trever. As for Kale himself, he dislikes like watching his brother go through such an identity crisis and would love to be able to do something about it, but knows that he doesn’t have the power to do so.
Instead he fights against Ash and Melkor in his own ways. He has become proficient in discovering and disabling all the spying devices that Melkor sets in their way.
Kale has also developed a bit of a crush on Rhys though he’s yet to do anything about it. As far as he knows Rhys is oblivious to crush and busy with the sudden reappearance of his son. While Trever and half the team went to investigate a series of ritual murders in Los Angeles that eventually was revealed to be done by Theo’s previously unknown brother, Kale, Rhys and the other half went to Maine where they discovered a cave and in the cave Rhys’ son, who he’d been lead to believe died in a plague while he was out learning magic. Clearly that takes priority over crushes an underling is having. So, Kale lets it be.
Much like Trever, Kale will be snatched up at the same time as Trever. After the Los Angeles cases and Veena giving birth to her kittens and before their trip to Canada.
Personality: Between Kale and Trever, Kale is the “good twin”. He takes after their father more than Trever does, and in that way he’s more like Nat. Though he is quite the McCallum, he was never as violent as his twin and some of the others. He prefers long ranged weapons to up front swords and thus tends to cover Trever when he goes into something. As the submissive twin, he allowed Trever to come up with most of the bad ideas for them to get into, though he did come up with a few of his own. Trever’s ideas were always more wild and dangerous. It’s also made him the more diplomatic of the pair. He’s less likely to hit first ask questions later and to give warning shots that may not actually be possibly deadly. Sometimes he might not even hurt the person badly. (Have we mentioned they’re insane?)
Since Kale’s abilities are more tactile and wearing on the mind, he’s less likely to get involved in things physically. He learned the lesson of touching things without thinking when he was eight and has been very careful ever since. It makes him seem shy or socially interested in things, but instead he’s just very cautious. He doesn’t want to get overloaded again.
Mostly Kale would love to have his own workshop and just be able to play with his machines all day long (and night, sleep is for wussies). He likes building computers and all sorts of interesting devices which the DMC sometimes require. He only really joined the DMC because Trever did and because of Rhys. While he does have the hero’s complex that Trever does, it’s not as strong, having been tempered by the earlier damage as a child. This traumatic experience was something that he can’t ever explain to Trever and something that his brother could never understand.
With the acquisition of Lan on the team, an empath and another psychometric, Kale has found someone who can understand him, understand what it’s like to see things through another person’s eyes. They haven’t had a chance to talk about such things yet, but Kale is glad there is someone there now.
While people think that Kale is friends with machines because he can talk to them and that’s why he prefers their company to real people’s, it’s not exactly true. He can talk to machines but they aren’t exactly alive or have any intelligence. He can just know what they do. Which doesn’t make for great conversation.
In his spare time Kale enjoys designing weapons, a thing he learned from his mother (because who else would he have learned it from?) but never actually does anything with the designs. Occasionally he’ll build a working prototype, but not often because it’s hard to get the proper materials. He then sends the designs off to his mother to put them in a Safe Place. This also falls into Kale’s hobbies as he’s a bit of a workaholic.
He does enjoy gambling and keeps a betting pool book for the family and the job. One of the things he started a pool on was when Theo would propose to Adrienne. That one was called dead because Adrian had “convinced” Theo that proposing to his sister on a certain day was a good idea. Pissing off people who can turn you into frogs? Bad idea.
Kale also likes making alcohol and has made beer in his apartment. He also helps with the family’s whiskey business when he’s at home. Another thing he loves to do is working on motorcycles, those are his Geek Out Thing, where Trever has his comic books and D&D games.
3 Interesting Character Facts:
1. Kale still hears the voices from the Watcher Stones in his mind on occasion calling to him. They aren’t the personalities themselves but instead a ‘call of fairy’ or being ‘fairy touched’.
2. As a joke he reprogrammed Theo - the necromancer’s- ringtone to only play “it’s a Dead Man’s Party” by Oingo Boingo and made it so that no one else can change it. (Fortunately for Theo, one of the kittens at the phone and so Kale hasn’t had a chance to do the same thing to the new one yet.)
3. If Rhys hadn’t shown up he probably would have joined the army like his mother did.
Powers: Kale is both psychometric and technomancer. He can read objects and discover who held them and get a sense of the person’s emotional state of mind and thoughts. If the person has an exceptionally strong personality they can overwhelm Kale’s own personality and sense of self. This has happened a few times in his life and has never ended well. Even if the personality isn’t that strong he may end up picking up mannerisms of the person for a few hours afterward. He can also ‘talk” to machines in such a way that he can figure out what is wrong with them or how to work them. Finally he has a nebulous “hero’s” ability. It’s basically he’s a prince and a descent of Heroes that makes him just a wee bit luckier than most people. It’s nothing quantifiable, but it’s as if his family is required to be heroic.
Special Skills: A very good engineer and computer programer. Can make, with the proper equipment a variety of devices or jury-rig things. Also the usual hacker shtick. Incredible alcohol tolerance. Piloting of small aircrafts and private jets. Knows how to use a gun and sword.
What is your character's comm icon and why? A cauldron on a green background, the cauldron representing one of the four Jewels of the Tuathan. He’s fourth in line to the throne, technically. If the throne was still a Thing. Which it is, in some circles Link to it. CONTINUE TO MARVEL AT MY ILLUSTRATOR SKILLZ

Absently, Kale poked the little mouse that once used to be his walkie talkie. The explosion of magical energy from Adrian and Eric trying to break through the cave wards. It had been highly unexpected, but then again they hadn’t expected Eric to try and steal energy from the wards. Both he and Adrian were completely out of it, which left the mission on hold until Adrian was able to try again. Lan was trying to make dinner and Rhys had gone off somewhere to brood. Which left Kale alone with the little mouse in a bucket.
The mouse looked up at him from the poke and wiggled its nose. It was friendly so far and felt exactly like a regular mouse. Some people’s instincts may be to just let the mouse go, for all that Kale knew the mouse wasn’t completely a mouse and his brother had droned on enough about how people were always letting magically altered animals into the ecosystems and thus destroying natural creatures. (As if Trever could talk, Mr. I Have A Teleporting Cat That’s Pregnant. Though then again they weren’t wild creatures.) So, he was keeping the mouse until Trever could take a look at it.
“It be an odd day, innit?” He said to the mouse. It said nothing back, at least nothing that Kale could understand. His technomancy didn’t work on the mouse so it definitely was alive. The flash of magic that caused the transformation also fried most of his equipment so he couldn’t figure out what exactly happened to cause the mouse to change.
He leaned over and picked up one of the panels he’d pried off. The entire circuit board had melted together. There was no way that he’d be able to do any sort of anything with his equipment like this. Seeing as how Adrian would likely be out of commission for about a day he could probably have things expressed shipped to the nearest town... about an hour’s drive away. (Thankfully their car didn’t get hurt in the explosion, being too far back.) Which meant he’d have to order new parts soon which meant he had to get the DMC credit card. Which meant he had to go and talk to Brooding Rhys which was always entertaining. The man rarely brooded, but when he did...
Putting the grill back on the mouse’s bucket, Kale got up and walked over to the edge of the cliff. Rhys stood with his back to everything staring out over the ocean. For a moment he hesitated bothering the other man. He radiated “I will kill anyone who gets near me” with every muscle of his body language. Still, Kale approached him. After all, if they wanted to get into the cave then they’d need new equipment which meant that Kale needed the card which meant Rhys had to get bothered.
He’d just have to deal with it.
Kale cleared his throat when he got close enough and said in one breath, “Me equipment be utterly fried. I can be getting new ones shipped in quickly, but I be needing the card.” When Rhys looked at him he added. “I be having a flask of the whiskey in me pack if you be wanting it?”
Because Rhys really looked like he needed a drink. And the flask of whiskey Kale had in his pack was some of the best out there.
"It’s likely a trap for me," Rhys said, no stranger to magical traps.
"Oh. Aye. Likely. But when did that be stopping us before?" Kale agreed cheerfully.
Rhys gave him a hard look and then shook his head. Pulling out his wallet he said, “We’re all crazy, you know that?”
“Aye,” Kale agreed. “But that be why you hired us?” He took the credit card and gave Rhys a salute with a cheeky grin. Before Rhys could take a swipe at him, he’d trotted down the ridge.
Kale is requested to wake up in Sebastian's bed. It's okay with him!
